And that’s how it has been for more than 40 years. Nothing has changed. The band has stayed in its lane, continuing to do its thing, bringing quality music from the heart night after night. It is the band members’ honesty and brilliant artistry that has allowed them to continue to headline at top concert venue across the globe. There are no gimmicks, no stage tricks in their shows. Just Beverly with his smooth, soulful vocals supported by the tight Maze band.

“They know what they are going to get with us,” says Beverly of the group’s audiences. “They trust us as musicians. You’ve got to be a good live act. You’ve got to know how to entertain. It goes beyond having hit records. You have to know how to present the music on stage.”

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly arrived on the scene in 1977 with a string of hits including “Happy Feelings,” “Lady of Magic,” “While I’m Alone” and “Workin’ Together.” And the soul classics continued with “Golden Time Of Day,” “Southern Girl,” “Joy and Pain,” “We Are One,” “Running Away,” “Back In Stride,” “Can’t Get Over You,” “Silky Soul” and “The Morning After.”

The essential must-have Maze albums include Joy and Pain (1980), Live In New Orleans (1981), We Are One (1983), Can’t Stop The Love (1985) and Live in Los Angeles (1986). Maze was saluted by Mary J. Blige, Avant, Ledisi and other acts on the 2009 hit album, Silky Soul Music: An All-Star Tribute To Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly.

Maze’s fans are familiar with the band’s rise to fame. A native of Philadelphia, Beverly grew up singing in church and later formed a group called The Butlers when he was a teenager. He later changed the name to Frankie Beverly’s Raw Soul.

The band’s star began to rise in the mid ‘70s when Marvin Gaye caught their show in the San Francisco/Oakland area. He took them on the road as his opening act and urged them to change their name from Raw Soul. Original member Roame came up with the name Maze and the rest is musical history.

Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly consists of Frankie Beverly (lead vocals), Roame (congas/ background vocals), Carl Wheeler (keyboards/synthesizers), Jubu (rhythm/lead guitar), Larry Kimpel (bass guitar), Calvin Napper (drums) and Vance Taylor (keyboards/synthesizers).

About Johnny Gill:

If ever a saying could summarize an individual’s life, it would be “Like a fine wine, it gets better with time.” No phrase could more aptly describe Grammy-nominated Johnny Gill, arguably one of the greatest R&B crooners to ever live.

With an unmistakable, unique trademark style, Gill has altered the sound of R&B music for three decades. With a signature voice that pairs superior singing with extraordinary showmanship, bringing the world classics such as “My, My, My,” “Rub You The Right Way,” “Where Do We Go From Here,” “Perfect Combination,” “Boys To Men,” “Can You Stand The Rain,” “My Body” and the timeless wedding song, “You For Me” from Tyler Perry’s hit movie Madea’s Family Reunion.

With a seemingly endless list of hits, ranging from his time in New Edition to the all-star trios L.S.G. (the late Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat) and Heads of State (Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant), it’s easy to see why Gill serves as the prototype for the supreme R&B singer. He is the only artist that has been in three highly successful groups, achieving both international and critical acclaim as a solo artist and group leader. Gill is one of the top legendary artists who have hits on the top 10 R&B Charts for three decades ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s.

Gill’s newest album, Game Changer, was released 2014 on his label and is still going strong. Game Changer features songs produced by Grammy award-winners Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Tony Dixon, Chuck Harmony, Claude Kelly and Vidal Davis. The first single, “Behind Closed Doors,” peaked at No. 6 on Billboard’s Urban Adult Contemporary charts. The video featured guest stars Nicole Murphy and actress Nadine Velazquez in a plot twist worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster.

In February 2019, Gill released the first single from Game Changer II called “Soul of A Woman.” Gill said, "This song is to remind women of how special they are and remind men how a woman should be appreciated." Along with this release, a powerful lyric video that showcases photos of powerful women of past, present and future Ms. Michelle Obama, Ms. Maya Angelou, RBG (Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg), Regina King and many more.

Simply providing enjoyment to the world was not enough. Johnny a true humanitarian of the highest kind, he was appointed as the national spokesman for the Points of Light Movement—a campaign that recognizes everyday men and women making a difference in their communities—by President George H. W. Bush.
