Did you know the following facts about Black maternal health? • In 2021, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women was 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, 2.6 times the rate for non-Hispanic white women. (Source: CDC). • In the U.S., Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. CDC notes that more than 80% of pregnancy related deaths are preventable. (Source: CDC) • Preterm birth (delivery before 37 weeks and 0/7 days of gestation) is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality in the United States. Despite advances in medical care, racial and ethnic disparities associated with preterm birth persist. (Source: CDC) In 2022, the rate of preterm birth among African-American women (14.6%) was about 50 percent higher than the rate of preterm birth among white or Hispanic women (9.4% and 10.1% respectively). (Source: CDC) • In the United States, 29–44% of Black women experience postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS), yet few are properly identified and/or connected to mental care services.
