Event Description: Almost any activity can be taught if broken down into clear, easy to follow steps. Successful author and artist Lin Wellford will share her journey into ‘writing what you know,’ and how it turned into an unexpected and lucrative career. She will guide participants in examining their own interests and passions, and seeing ways to make them a marketable commodity. Using the same formula that made her instructional art books so successful, she will break the process down into clear steps that can help aspiring authors see new possibilities for their writing careers. With changes in media and the way information is delivered, the opportunities to build a platform and establish expertise is limited only by your energy and imagination. Whether it’s how you learned to tie the perfect fly for catching trout, or what you learned from putting together themed birthday parties for your kids, how to restore and repurpose furniture or to plan and pack for a fail-proof campout, she will offer tips on how to mine your life experiences and interests to create salable how-to material that can open up a new world of possibilities for using your way with words. About the instructor Lin Wellford accumulated a drawer full of rejection slips as she struggled to become to become a writer. In frustration, she decided to try writing a ‘how-to’ book featuring stepped-out instructions for painting animals on rocks, using techniques she’d developed. Her submission was accepted by the second publisher she queried, and she went on to write 7 more instructional art books that sold well over a million copies. Her first book remained in print for almost 20 years, convincing her that non-fiction offers more longevity that fiction. In the course of her career, she appeared on dozens of regional television shows as well as four segments on the popular Carol Duvall Show on HGTV and several other network shows. She used what she learned from those books to write a book on choosing your grandparent name that attracted the attention of Grandparents.com and continues to sell steadily. Cost for event is $25.00; Free to High School Students
