Event Description: From 1951-l955, Edward R. Murrow hosted This I Believe, a daily radio program that reached 39 million listeners. On this broadcast, Americans—both well known and unknown—read five-minute essays about their personal philosophy of life. They shared insights about individual values that shaped their daily actions. The first volume of This I Believe essays, published in 1952, sold 300,000 copies—more than any other book in the U. S. during that year except for the Bible. In fact, these Murrow broadcasts were so popular that curriculum was developed to encourage high school students to compose essays about their most significant personal beliefs. (npr.org) This workshop takes the basis of this curriculum and tailors it to fit the needs of adult writers. The workshop will include: Recognizing What a Personal Essay Consists of Identifying What You Really Believe? What Quotations Guide Your Life How to Get Off to a Great Start Supporting My Personal Philosophy About the instructor Kathy Manus teaches Creative Writing, Journalism, Yearbook, AP Language and Composition, ELL English, and 11th grade English at Eureka Springs High School. I am originally from Memphis, TN where she grew up, and has lived in Eureka Springs for 3 years. She is married and a mother of three children ages 18, 12, and 10. Cost of event $45.00; Free to High School Students
